- Mankind is being attacked, and only our maverick captain and his plucky crew can stop the scary new enemy
- Their warship is outdated and held together with duct tape and string
- Fleet command will get in the way
- I don't need to worry so much about the specifics of guns, ships, and raw science. Getting those details right is good, but most readers will forgive occasional lapses
- I need a happy ending. The protagonist has to succeed, even if there is a cost in doing so. This means that the story must be self-contained. A series is fine, but there must be a hard ending in each book. A major enemy is vanquished, even if a larger threat still exists.
- Showing a race of aliens, or even two, is just fine. Trying to present dozens of them like Star Wars does will overly complicate things, and alienate readers. Think Star Trek. You've got the occasional Klingon or Vulcan, but the vast majority of the cast is human.
- Game of Thrones style character deaths will not play well. My target readers aren't looking for Grimdark. Offing a side character here or there might work, but people don't want the cost of success to be too high.
