Heâd done it. Heâd spoken up and started a conversation instead of an argument. Beck was feeling good. Theyâd gotten past the apologies and forgiveness and now they were on Church Street, wandering, holding hands and enjoying the evening air while they waited for their reservation time.
This was fucking amazing. Sky was glowing next to him, the canopy of lights making Skyâs eyes sparkle, turning him on with every smile.
Every so often Sky would touch his wedding ring, stroking his finger, making electricity shoot up his arm. Heâd put the ring in his pocket before he left for Baltimore, but it had taken him a while to feel right about putting it back on. It hadnât left his finger since they got back to Vermont, though, when it started to feel like there was hope.
âThe restaurantâs up here. Itâs almost time.â This was something he and Sky hadnât been able to do much. Hold hands in public. He was lucky to have moved somewhere so liberal and welcoming.
âHave you decided what wine youâre going to torture me with, babe?â Sky bumped his shoulder into Beckâs arm.
âChianti. If you can handle it.â A glass of wine would do him some good after this emotional day. It was a shame Sky couldnât join him. âIf not, Iâll have a Coke.â
âYouâre not going to let me have one glass?â Oh, that puppy dog look.
âSkyâ¦Kevinâs already going to beat me over your hip.â But maybe it wasnât that big a deal? What was the worst that could happen?
âI had my pill at what? Nine? That was ten hours ago, and Iâm not driving.â Sky squeezed his fingers. âBut if you think itâs a bad move, I wonât be a bitch about it, promise.â
He wondered if Mr. âIâll tell you if I need the ERâ understood how much that little concession meant to him. Or if Sky had even done it consciously. Either way, Sky was trusting his judgment and it felt good. âOne glass, and you donât tell on me.â
âFair enough. Are you going to get noodles?â Sky bounced a little bit, not too much. âIâm loving being able to eat carbs.â
âI donât know. Probably. Maybe the cream sauceâ¦um. Alfredo. With veggies. Iâll share.â He had to admit, as much as Sky was hot at fighting weight, his off-season lover, with a little bulk alongside that muscle, was even better. Sky wasnât there yet, with having been hurt and the surgeries and the meds, but would be soon. Especially if he kept going for the carbs.
âMmmâ¦I love it when you make that. I never eat Alfredo out because yours is better.â
âReally?â Well, that was nice. Heâd had no idea. âThis winter weâll have some people over for your chili.â Sky had to meet everybody first, though. Adam and the paralegals at work, Paul and Danny, his buddies at the marina. The neighbors. His skiing friends. Everybody. âThere are people you should meet sooner, of course. Adamâs been asking.â
âI like folks, and Iâm walking now, even if I have tennies on.
