9 Mob Rule
* * *
The crowd surged forward and pulled Ken out of the open top of his convertible.
âHey! What are you doing?â Ken cried. âLet go!â
âCome on!â Frank said, dashing to Kenâs aid. Joe, Phil, and Julie followed right behind.
Ken had given up on resisting the mob, and was now trying to protect his car. âWatch the paint job!â he yelled. âI just had the detailing redone!â People grabbed at him, yanking his clothes and pulling him in several different directions at once.
âLet go of him!â Joe shouted. He pushed his way through the crowd toward the embattled singer.
The people gathered outside the hotel noticed the Hardys and their friends for the first time. Like a pack of wild animals, the mob turned in one piece. âSheâs one too,â a woman cried, pointing at Julie.
âYou owe us restitution!â someone yelled as the mob surged around the four surprised teens.
A moment later Jackie and Ray came down the street and spotted the conflict. Leaving their cars in the middle of the road, they dove into the mob to help their friends.
Everywhere, people were grabbing and pushing. They didnât seem interested in actually hurting the band members, but they were definitely hostile. âWhatâs going on? Why are you doing this?â Julie screamed.
âI nearly got killed at that theater tonight!â one man yelled angrily.
âGive us our money back, you thieves!â bellowed another. âWe know youâve got it!â
âWhat are you talking about?â Frank shouted. âNo one here has your money!â
Jackie and Ray pushed up beside Frank, forming a tight knot with the Hardys and their friends. Ken was still a short distance away, but the group was moving steadily in his direction. Fear flashed across the faces of the band members.
âStay together!â Joe called to his friends. âProtect one anothersâ backs!â
The crowd came at them again, shoving, grabbing, and screaming accusations.
âThey stopped the show and split!â a burly teen accused, snarling. âWith our admission money. I heard it on the radio! We came to hear a concertânot to get ripped off!â He aimed a punch at the back of Philâs head.
Joe blocked the blow and elbowed the teen in the side of the head. The angry teen reeled back into the mob, and the crowd surged forward to replace him with someone else. More enraged kids tried to attack them, but Frank kept them back with a series of sweeping martial arts kicks.
âChill out,â the older Hardy said. âYou heard wrong. No one here has your money!â
Ken pushed through the crowd and staggered into the small clearing around the Hardys. He looked batteredâhis clothes were torn. âYou want your money back,â Ken said to the mob, âtalk to the theater. We donât have it!â
The angry fans growled their disbelief. âLiar!â someone called from the back of the group. The crowd surged at the band again.
âPhil, call the cops,â Joe said over his shoulder. He blocked a punch aimed at Rayâs back.
âAlready on it,â Phil replied. âIâm calling Billie Greenberg, too. Maybe she can make sense out of this mess.
