Chapter Nine
When they arrived at the High Desert Rodeo grounds and the competitorsâ parking area in the back, Amanda pulled her dually and trailer next to the large, black horse trailer and matching truck custom painted with the Wright Ranch logo and parked. Her hands had grown sweaty on the wheel with Liam seated next to her in the truck. She was just so aware of him. It was more than a little nerve-racking.
Liamâs men had already unloaded his bucking horses into the rough stock corrals. Amanda spotted several she recognized milling about the corral in front of where sheâd parked. Including Wild Bill.
She turned to Liam seated in the passenger seat. His attention was on the horses in the corral also, his sharp gaze seemingly noticing everything.
âYou think Wild Bill is ready to compete?â she asked.
âNo. But I had Mitch load him up, anyway. The gelding still needs to get used to the sights and sounds of the rodeo.â
âYeah, he was a little on the feisty side the other day, wasnât he?â She grinned, unable to resist teasing him a little.
âFeisty is good, but only at the appropriate time.â He looked toward her with a smile, obviously remembering Wild Billâs unscheduled break from the bucking chute into the arena.
Then his gaze dipped to the opened buttons at the top of her western shirt and she imagined a different sort of feistiness.
She swallowed and forced herself back on track. âYouâll get him there. If anyone can, itâs you.â
His expression sobered. âThank you, Amanda.â
Sheâd intended the comment to be offhanded, but her compliment meant something to him. Did he not know how good he was with his bucking horses? If anyone could handle a difficult horse, it was Liam. While heâd been quick to anger since heâd witnessed his mother being injured, he was never angry around the horses. Never. They had always appeared to be his balm.
Even if she was inclined, Amanda was prevented from asking Liam the question straight out because he quickly climbed out of the truck. He surprised her again by going to the back of her horse trailer rather than straight to the corral to check his horses. By the time sheâd climbed out of the truck and went to join him at the rear, he already had the gate open and was backing Rumbles out of the trailer.
His touch was gentle and his tone encouraging. Like sheâd just been thinking, he was good with horses. Something shifted in her chest.
Before she could process what she was feeling, Liam handed Rumblesâs lead to her and moved to the trailer tack room at the front. He pulled her barrel racing saddle and pad and Rumblesâs bridle from the racks.
âLiam, I can do that.â She did it every single day, actually.
âI know.â He handed her the bridle and settled the pad and saddle on Rumblesâs back, not missing a beat.
Amanda rolled her eyes and slid the bit into her mareâs mouth and the bridle onto her head.
As he
