Chapter 11

Tuesday, July 10 at 2 p.m.

After they entered Florence’s Diner, Jax noticed Ebony appeared wide-eyed the way he did when he first entered a few months ago. Black and white laminate tiles covered the floor in a checkerboard pattern. A smaller checkerboard design bordered the top of the dark gray counter. Cakes and pies sat encased behind glass on each side of the marble white countertop. She glanced around as they sat in a booth with red and white seating. “I feel like we just got dropped back into the 1950s.”

Jax nodded. “Yeah, Florence is not the original owner. She was named after her grandmother who opened the diner back in 1952. They kept the same décor and added new customized booths, and the kitchen is state-of-the-art.”

Ebony picked up a glossy laminated menu. “And how did you find out all that information?”

He grinned. “People naturally like to talk to me, Ebony.”

“Mmm, all that charm.”

She hid her face behind the large menu, but Jax had no doubt she was hiding a smirk.

“Look who’s back.” Florence Lewis had a booming voice for a small woman. Well, she was small in height, but wide in girth. She kind of waddled like a penguin, but had a hundred watt smile on her face.

Jax beamed. “Good to see you again, Florence.”

She eyed Ebony. “Who’s this young lady? I knew a good looking man like you had to have a woman.”

Jax looked at Ebony, whose chocolate skin seemed to deepen in tone.

Is she blushing?

Jax could have corrected Florence’s assumption, but he was enjoying Ebony’s displays of discomfort. Jax could only hope it was due to her possible interest in him.

Florence whipped out her pad. “What will you have?”

Jax asked, “Isn’t one of your waitresses supposed to be taking orders?”

She winked at him. “Honey, both of my waitresses would get your order wrong because they would be too busy staring at you.”

Now it was Jax’s turn to feel warm, and he knew color had probably crept up around his cheeks.

“Look at you blushing. I like a humble man.”

He cleared his throat. “I will have the All-American cheeseburger with a side of fries. Ice tea.” His eyes traveled to the counter. “Is that an apple pie I see inside the display case?”

Florence grinned. “Yes, sir. A slice of apple pie. You want a dollop of ice cream or whip topping?”

“You sure know how to spoil a man, Florence.”

“Okay, sugar. Don’t you go getting fresh now. I’ve been married for almost thirty years.”

He arched an eyebrow. “Lucky man.”

Florence turned to Ebony, who’d been looking back and forth at them, an incredulous expression on her face. “Um, I will have what he’s having. Hard to decide.”

“Good for you. This man has good taste. He won’t lead you wrong, honey.”

Ebony typed furiously on her phone, while Jax observed her. He looked out the window. Though they were in a time warp inside the diner, the reality of the world awaited them. They still needed to uncover if Maddock had been keeping a dark secret all these years about his childhood friend.
