CHAPTER SIX - The Note

On Sunday, Kyle was playing a video game online when I walked in.

“Hey, stranger”

“Oh hey, you wanna play? I think there’s like three people online here.”

“Nah, actually, I wanted to talk to you.”

“Okay,” he said without taking his eyes off the game. “Did Miranda send you over or something?”

“No, I came myself. Why?”

He went on to say that Miranda said that I’d met someone and she had no idea who. He said that she’d been pestering for him to find out.

“So, I thought you’d eventually tell me. Why so late bro?” He continued again without moving away from his game.

“Cause it’s not that simple.”

“Why not?”

I reminded him how he had teased me about Mike Sarafin and I told him it was true. This confession made him stop playing and look at me.

“For real?” He said, with a confused look on his face. “But he plays soccer and stuff.”

This kind of annoyed me. Kyle could be a real ignoramus at times and this was a perfect example. He was a fun guy to be with and we grew up together but there were sides of him that I think he’d hidden from Miranda.

“Look, not that I’m against it or anything, but right now it’s weirding me out and I gotta think. You know what I mean?”

I told him that I didn’t understand and reminded him that we’d been friends almost all our lives and this shouldn’t mean anything different.

“Well, dude, I have a girlfriend and I gotta think of her. Just give me some time to think, okay?”

“Screw you and take a lifetime,” I said and I stormed out of the room.

I honestly thought he would be more understanding. I stormed into my house, slammed the door and ran up the stairs. Play-doh followed sensing my frustration. I knew that I had to call Mike.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Do you have a minute?”

I told him how I went over to Kyle’s to tell him about us. I went on to say that Kyle wasn’t as much of a friend as I thought he would be. I thought it was weird because I‘d never heard Kyle say a derogatory word ever. He was a walking dictionary of foul words but nothing derogatory towards anyone in particular.

Mike was really cool and pointed out that I should have spoken to him before revealing our relationship. It was the first time I heard him refer to it as a relationship and it gave me a warm feeling.

I told him that I didn’t really want to keep secrets from my folks either and asked Mike if should I tell them. He said that he couldn’t give me an answer because he didn’t know them well enough. He said he could never tell his folks because they were kind of narrow minded and it would probably get biblical. Mike and I agreed that the best way for me to tell my parents was to talk to them together.

It felt good talking to Mike.

“Hey, I have to wax your skis.
