CHAPTER SIX - The Note
On Sunday, Kyle was playing a video game online when I walked in.
âHey, strangerâ
âOh hey, you wanna play? I think thereâs like three people online here.â
âNah, actually, I wanted to talk to you.â
âOkay,â he said without taking his eyes off the game. âDid Miranda send you over or something?â
âNo, I came myself. Why?â
He went on to say that Miranda said that Iâd met someone and she had no idea who. He said that sheâd been pestering for him to find out.
âSo, I thought youâd eventually tell me. Why so late bro?â He continued again without moving away from his game.
âCause itâs not that simple.â
âWhy not?â
I reminded him how he had teased me about Mike Sarafin and I told him it was true. This confession made him stop playing and look at me.
âFor real?â He said, with a confused look on his face. âBut he plays soccer and stuff.â
This kind of annoyed me. Kyle could be a real ignoramus at times and this was a perfect example. He was a fun guy to be with and we grew up together but there were sides of him that I think heâd hidden from Miranda.
âLook, not that Iâm against it or anything, but right now itâs weirding me out and I gotta think. You know what I mean?â
I told him that I didnât understand and reminded him that weâd been friends almost all our lives and this shouldnât mean anything different.
âWell, dude, I have a girlfriend and I gotta think of her. Just give me some time to think, okay?â
âScrew you and take a lifetime,â I said and I stormed out of the room.
I honestly thought he would be more understanding. I stormed into my house, slammed the door and ran up the stairs. Play-doh followed sensing my frustration. I knew that I had to call Mike.
âHey, whatâs up?â
âDo you have a minute?â
I told him how I went over to Kyleâs to tell him about us. I went on to say that Kyle wasnât as much of a friend as I thought he would be. I thought it was weird because Iâd never heard Kyle say a derogatory word ever. He was a walking dictionary of foul words but nothing derogatory towards anyone in particular.
Mike was really cool and pointed out that I should have spoken to him before revealing our relationship. It was the first time I heard him refer to it as a relationship and it gave me a warm feeling.
I told him that I didnât really want to keep secrets from my folks either and asked Mike if should I tell them. He said that he couldnât give me an answer because he didnât know them well enough. He said he could never tell his folks because they were kind of narrow minded and it would probably get biblical. Mike and I agreed that the best way for me to tell my parents was to talk to them together.
It felt good talking to Mike.
âHey, I have to wax your skis.
