10. Pour Some Sugar on Me

“Do you have everything?” Mark asked me. He patted the pockets of his dark-brown dress slacks. “Oh, wait, yeah. I have the keys. Mack said he’d let me into the apartment if you forgot anything. Let me know, and I’ll—”

“It’s fine.” I hiked my bag higher onto my shoulder. “I’m coming back in a month, not a year.”

“We’re in agreement about the little black book I showed you in the car, right?” he asked. “You won’t tell anyone about it yet?”

“Absolutely. I have no idea what Morelli, Smith, and the other names mean, but I’m not telling anyone, including Carrington, that I know about that book. It’s our secret.”

“That’s fine,” he said. “I’m not comfortable logging it into evidence, given what happened with John after you passed out.”

“And you’re sure he tried to steal it?” I asked with trepidation.

“It’s not something I’d mistake. I’ll leave the book with Mack to put in your lockbox the next time I stop by to collect the mail. In the meantime, I’ll do a little more digging on those names.” Across the tarmac, the flight attendant held her thumb high. A few of her brunette wisps floated on the wind before she disappeared into the cabin. “I guess that means you have to go, huh?”

“I’ll text every couple days,” I assured him. “It’ll be no different than when I’m on tour. It’s my turn to hop across the pond and find my place amongst the roses.”

“Pres, I know you’re telling me everything is fine. But if there’s ever a time when everything isn’t fine, please pick up the phone and—”

“I promise you, Kennedy, if I ever need help, you’ll be the first one to know.”

He shuffled his feet as he eyed the airstairs. “Chartered plane?” he asked. I confirmed it. “Well, I guess it’s for the best you’ll be far away from here. I’m investigating every avenue, but those bastards scattered like rats into the woodpile.” He glanced at my ears and neck. “The second I hear anything, I’ll contact you.”

“You’ve been doing that for the last five days,” I said. “Are they that noticeable?”

“Not really. I just know you don’t wear jewelry. It’s different.”

“It is for me too, but they were thoughtful. Carrington gave them to me before he left.”

I remembered the scene from my dressing room on Sunday morning.

“I know from the message you sent that you’re not one to graciously accept gifts,” Carrington had said. “I do, however, hope you’ll grant me an exception this one time.” He walked up behind me at the closet mirror as I slipped my new favorite shirt over my head. “You’re not even going to launder it?”

I met his eyes in the reflection. “Nope. Then it won’t smell like you. It’ll smell like detergent, and who wants that?”

“Dirty girl,” he whispered, then kissed the sensitive spot behind my ear. I bit the inside of my bottom lip as he put his hand into his pocket. “Close your eyes, darling.” He sighed when I glanced over at him.
