This horrific object comes from 17th-century Scotland but other places around the British Isles used them too. It was known as a “jougs” and was a punishment collar for those accused of witchcraft.

The collar was padlocked around a victim’s neck and those sharp spikes would dig into their chest and chin. They were then chained up in public, often to a church wall where passers-by would hurl insults or worse. Victims were often left locked up for days at a time.

SLAVE COLLAR

A different kind of collar but no less humiliating for the poor wearer. This is a slave’s collar dating from Roman times. It’s an iron ring with a bronze tag that has a Latin inscription that, translated, reads:

I have run away; hold me. When you have brought me back to my master Zoninus, You will receive a gold coin.

Often, if a slave did run away, once captured and returned, they would be flogged, kept in chains, or forced to have a tattoo on their forehead, making it more difficult to escape in future.
