For a moment there was a hush. Then George, echoing Eric Clapton's late night revelation to him, turned to Ringo and said, âYou know, Ringo, I'm in love with your wife.â
A long, stunned silence followed. No one had the nerve to speak, everyone waiting to hear how Ringo would respond. Visibly upset, but keeping his head, he flicked the ashes off his cigarette into an ashtray. At last he turned to George. âBetter you than someone we don't know.â
Pattie fled to another room, accompanied by Chris. Maureen showed up after a few minutes and asked if they wanted another drink. For the rest of the evening, everyone pretended that the event had never happened.15
On July 4, 1974, Pattie decided that her marriage with George had become a sham. She left him and went to California to stay with her sister Jenny and Jenny's husband, Mick Fleetwood. Eric Clapton learned the news several days later. He phoned and asked Pattie to come and join him while he toured, which she quickly did.
Harrison accepted the transition with stoic detachment, preferring that Pattie go off to live with his friend rather than with someone he might consider unworthy. The next time the three of them met, Clapton felt awkward and anxious and tried to apologize. George shrugged it off. He said with a laugh, âWell, I suppose I'd better divorce her.â Clapton was relieved and grateful to have the tense situation resolved by Harrison's gracious acceptance.
George and Pattie would reach an amicable divorce in 1977. Two years later, when George attended a wedding reception for Pattie and Eric, he introduced himself to the other guests as the âhusband-in-law.â16
