CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Two miles away from the Secret Intelligence Service building, an ‘Ed’s Carpet Fitter’ van sat parked up in a side street. Babak sat in the front passenger seat with a laptop open on his lap, its volume up full, as Darius, Kaveh and Farid lent in from the driver’s seat and back of the van to listen. They’d hacked Danny’s phone when they broke into his house, allowing them to follow its whereabouts and access its microphone and camera undetected any time they wanted.

‘I can’t believe they’re lying to their own men about the contents of the case,’ Farid said, shaking his head.

‘They are snakes brother, they lie to everyone,’ Kaveh said back to him.

‘Shhh, quiet,’ Darius snapped, silencing them instantly.

“Get me, Tom, and two men of his choice on the next plane for Cape Town.”

Babak disconnected the call when the conversation in the meeting room ended, leaving the van in silence while they all waited for Darius to decide upon the next move.

‘We follow Pearson. If he is as good as they say, he will lead us to Nicholas Snipe. We will go to Cape Town.’

There was a groan from behind them, causing them to turn slowly. Ed, the carpet fitter’s eyes rolled around in his head as he came round. An egg-sized bump on the side of his head throbbed painfully from where Babak had knocked him unconscious with a tyre wrench. Farid and Kaveh both jumped on him, taking turns to punch him in the face until he stopped moving.

‘Is he out?’ Darius said, his eyes never leaving the pictures taken from Simon’s file showing Dr Samantha Mandrell’s information.

‘He’s out.’

‘Good, then we go. We have work to do.’
