Women Speakers and Interlocutors
From mothers-to-be and their angelic interlocutors to the gossiping accomplices of a viceroyâs wife, this chapter focuses on the speech of Qurâanic women. I highlight patterns and explore didactic and affective dimensions of this speech. When, where, how, and to whom do women and girls speak? How do girls and women assert political, religious, and other types of epistemic authority through their speech? What information does their speech imply about their characters, values, and outlooks? What virtues does this speech aim at instilling? How does the speech of pious women compare to the speech of pious men?
I also discuss womenâs interactions with God and divine messengers. By way of comparison, Adam receives âwords from his Lordâ (Q 2:37), and Moses converses with God at length; the dialogue that transpires between God and Moses is, in one instance, nearly forty verses long (Q 20:11â48). The Prophet MuhÌ£ammad receives Godâs Word as the Qurâan. What then is the nature of Godâs communication with women? How do women speak with Godâs messengers? I begin with the authoritative speech of a singular ant, and the namesake of SÅ«rat al-Naml (Q 27), the surah with the most verses containing female speech.1
