Blake

What was I doing? Seriously? What was I doing fixing things and flirting with Wendy? My wolf sat in my head with as satisfied a smile on his face as a wolf could. He wouldn't let me walk away without helping Wendy. If I could fix the lock on the door, but I wasn't a locksmith, and I didn't have a new lock in my truck.

“People don’t take care of things,” Wendy said, shaking me out of my thoughts.

She'd followed me around, which made sense since she knew what things were broken, but her scent permeated me and got into my nose. Each time she was close, my wolf wanted me to take her.

She was my employee, and I couldn't cross that line.

Wendy was hard to resist. My belly was full with her food, and her laughter rang in my ears. So much time had passed that I couldn't remember the last time anyone laughed at my jokes. The scene was domestic, and I could get used to it.

I shouldn't. I couldn't let Wendy see my darkness. I couldn't bring that on her sunny personality. It wasn't fair, but she was here, making me laugh.

I leaned back on my haunches and looked at the chair. “Sit in it.”

She did as I asked, looking up at me expectantly with dark eyes that reminded me of chocolate ganache.

"It doesn't move anymore. So I kept putting some napkins underneath."

“That’s not a great long-term solution.”

“I feel as if I have a new house, Blake.”

The way she said my name sent electricity through me. “I haven’t done that much.”

She put a hand on my arm, and there was that jolt. "It's the little things that make a big difference."

I knew what she was talking about, but the buzzing in my ears distracted me. I had to get away from Wendy. This wasn't going to go anywhere. I looked down at her hand on me, wanting to brush it off and run outside. That would be rude, and Wendy didn't deserve that. She probably had no idea of her effect on me. This wasn't her fault.

I turned as if looking for other things to fix, and her hand fell off of my arm. If I hadn't broken contact, I might have kissed her. "Is there anything else?"

“If you have a new lock in your truck.”

I flashed a smile over my shoulder. “No, sorry. I should have bought one of those first.”

“Can we nail the door shut?”

“Would that make you feel safe?”

She bit her lip as she pondered that. “No.”

"Well then, do you want me to stay?"

My wolf did a happy dance, but I mentally admonished him. Nothing was going to happen. I regretted the words as soon as they were out, but I had no choice. I couldn't leave Wendy vulnerable, and there was no way I was bringing her to my place. Then her scent would be there, and I'd never get rid of it. If that happened, my wolf would bug me all the time.
