KENZIE

It took me a second to compose myself after I walked out the door. Aron’s reaction to Marius was completely unexpected. I’d never seen him so angry. His protectiveness was hot…really hot. He was a High Ruler, one of the most powerful beings on earth, and he was protecting me.

I understood why Filip had asked me to leave. They needed privacy, and I wasn’t a High Ruler. That didn’t stop my curiosity, though. My imagination ran wild, thinking up insane scenarios that they were discussing.

I tried to suppress my disappointment, even though there wasn’t anyone else in the hallway to see my face. And on top of that, my relationship with Aron was definitely confirmed by the way he’d pushed—or thrown, was more like it—Marius across the room. Maybe Daria had been exaggerating the possible threats to my wellbeing. At least, I hoped she was exaggerating.

I wandered down the hall toward a lounge where Aron and I sometimes sat between his meetings, going over reports and other items on his to-do list. Unfortunately, it wasn’t empty when I turned the corner.

Dorian and Seb were there, talking with their heads bowed toward each other. I heard bits of their conversation, something about Romania.

Before I could back away, they noticed me, going quiet. It would have been rude if I just walked away, so I waved. Seb waved for me to come over, and against my better judgement, I did.

“Hello,” he said with a smile. Despite his obvious disdain for Aron, his flirtatiousness with me still hadn’t completely ceased.

“Hi, how are you?” I asked, not really caring about his answer to that question.

“Good, good.” Dorian pulled up a seat. “Would you like anything to drink? Water? Mead?”

“Oh, no, thanks,” I answered. “I was just passing by.”

“Without Aron?” Seb raised a dark eyebrow.

“Yes, he’s in a meeting.” I didn’t want to be there, so I didn’t even try to force a smile. “It’s a private matter.”

“I’ve never heard of a meeting that a High Ruler goes to without his top advisor. Have you, Dorian?” Seb asked. The mocking pity in his undertone pissed me off.

“I haven’t.” Dorian shrugged nonchalantly. “It must be serious.”

“Interesting that you think that, but that’s completely untrue. His initiation ceremony didn’t include me…or either of you, for that matter.” I paused for dramatic effect, and Dorian just shrugged. “They have a right to privacy, just like everyone else.”

“I suppose,” Seb responded.

I glanced over toward the hallway. “I have to take care of something, so I have to go.” That was a lie. I had nothing to do. “It was nice seeing you.” Also a lie.

I made my escape, going to a different lounge where I could be alone. Dorain and Seb were part of Aron’s inner circle, meaning that they were supposed to be loyal to him and to the territory he ruled.

Nothing about them screamed ‘honesty’ or ‘loyalty.’ They had toned down the way they blatantly challenged Aron, just so they’d keep their positions. Their behavior was still questionable, making me wonder about their intentions.
