Chapter Nine

T he restaurant turned out to be one she knew well. Her brother enjoyed it immensely and took her here at least four times a year. Perhaps he’d found the place through his and Erin’s friendship. Jayden glanced at the man across from her while taking a sip of her wine, enjoying the bright flash of cherry undertones across her tongue.

Erin was busy asking the waitress about this or that, smiling as bright as the sun. The woman leaned closer, sweeping her manicured fingers toward the menu, her heaving breasts near brushing his shoulder as she grinned. She was flirting her brains out, but the man didn’t seem interested at all beyond getting his inquiries answered. Either that, or he was so oblivious it hurt to watch.

Jayden hid her smile behind the rim of her glass, quietly watching the two interact. She already knew exactly what she wanted as she ordered the same dish every time they came. Chicken parmesan with extra garlic bread. There was no place in town that could make it better, and that included the castle kitchens.

“Thank you for answering all of my questions,” Erin told the woman, a charming blush across his cheeks.

Placing one hand on Erin’s shoulder, fingers brushing his collarbone, the woman laughed. It was sultry enough Jayden lifted her brows, lips pursed. How daring! Erin caught the look with a swipe of his eyes, and they crinkled at the corners as if he knew exactly what went through her m ind.

“O f course, honey,” the waitress purred, laying it on thick.

Jayden wanted to roll her eyes.

“Well, I’ll get the chicken pesto pasta at your recommendation. How about you, Jay?” He asked, using the familiar nickname he’d given her years prior.

It established a sense of familiarity between them that made the woman frown, straightening. The two at the table barely acknowledged the sudden shift in attitude as Jayden answered.

“Chicken parm with extra garlic bread. Thanks.”

The woman wrote both orders down with a flourish before striding away, not speaking another word. Jayden watched her disappear into the kitchen while shaking her head in disbelief. The moment it didn’t look good for the woman’s sexual conquest she turned tail and ran. It was hilarious. Not to mention that Jayden couldn’t even think about being so forward toward the princes, let alone doing it to a stranger! She didn’t know whether to applaud the woman or feel offended.

“That was something,” she said, turning her gaze back to Erin. “Does that happen to you often?”

He shrugged. “Kind of . I don’t have a ring on, and my appearance is easy enough to remember, so women like to think they have a chance with me. Everyone would like to marry the grand preceptor, would they not?”

His words should have sounded pompous, but they were only matter-of-fact.

“Sure, sure. So why haven’t you married? You're Daniel’s age, you know, and not getting any younger.”

At the mention of her brother, Erin seemed to star tle ever so slightly, shoulders tensing. Jayden noted it, yet didn’t allow her teasing expression to falter for even a second.
