“YOU LOOK LIKE SHIT.”

Mechanic and I were sitting in my office with the blinds drawn and lights off. My head felt like someone was trying to hammer a nail into the back of my skull but kept missing.

“I look about ten times better than I feel,” I said. “It was a long night.”

“You stayed out too late.”

“There was too much of everything.”

Mechanic raised his eyebrows.

“Well, almost everything,” I said.

“Her place or yours?”

“Hers. I don’t remember exactly how we got there, but I remember waking up knowing that I wasn’t in my bed.”

“You need more of that in your life.”

“Some of it. Not all of it. My head feels like there’s a tiny jackhammer trapped inside.”

I took a long swallow of coffee. The caffeine seemed to be helping. I still didn’t have an appetite, and it was almost noon.

“I took some liberties and did a little digging around,” Mechanic said.

“So, you were out enterprising?”

“One way to put it. Turns out my cousin’s girlfriend works at OIG.”

“What does she do?”

“Administrative assistant. She helps sort out the complaints coming into the office and makes sure they get seen by the right people.”

“Have you talked to her yet?”

“No, but my cousin said her friend would be willing to sit down with you. She remembers the Griffin investigation.”

“When is she available?”

“Anytime we want. She has the day off.”
