I hope to be allowed to eat and sleep, but I donât get my wish. It feels as though Iâve only just closed my eyes inside one of the tents when Wulfheard wakes me once more. Ealdorman Ãlfstanâs harsh words to Wulfheard for what he did to me were little more than a gentle scolding. I know Wulfheard would do it again without even considering the consequences. I vow there and then to never stand behind the tall man in battle again. I wonât take the chance.
âGet up.â His words arenât friendly.
Iâve fallen asleep in Wulfheardâs tent, seemingly on his bed of furs. âSorry,â I begin. I struggle upright.
âYou needed to sleep. It doesnât matter where that occurred,â he rumbles at me. It appears he doesnât mind. I stifle a yawn. âAnyway, itâll do you good for when we leave tonight.â
âLeave for where?â I demand to know, entirely alert now.
âYouâll lead us back inside the fort.â
âWhat?â I gasp.
âYouâll lead a group of Mercians into the fort. Weâll take control of it and, if possible, Lord Ãthelwulf and the warriors there.â
âBut King Ecgberht is inside the market settlement?â What Iâm being told doesnât make sense to me.
âKing Ecgberht is the concern of Ealdorman Tidwulf and King Wiglaf. Weâre going after Lord Ãthelwulf.â
âBut I canât be sure that weâll even be able to get inside the way I escaped.â
âThen you better hope that we can.â Wulfheard is far from reassuring as he fixes me with his steady gaze. âKing Wiglaf demands this of you. If I didnât know better, Iâd say he was aggrieved you survived your ordeal. That man is an ungrateful sod.â
I gasp to hear Wulfheard criticise the king, yet I more than half agree with him.
âWhat of the slaves I brought with me?â Iâve not seen Theodore and Gaya since they left my side, following Ealdorman Tidwulf.
âTheyâre Tidwulfâs now. Heâs taken control of their destiny.â
âTheyâre both healers,â I state. This means something to me.
âAh, lad. Whatever they are, theyâre valuable because of what they know. Donât concern yourself with them.â But thatâs easy enough for Wulfheard to say. He doesnât know them, and I do.
âIs he at least ensuring theyâre kept warm and given food?â
Wulfheard chuckles at the reproach in my voice. âThey have better accommodation than you do and more than enough food. I wouldnât worry about them. Ealdorman Tidwulf seems only too eager to have someone to speak of his homeland with.â
Grudgingly, I accept that might be pleasant for all three of them.
âWhoâs joining us?â I demand to know.
âYouâll see, in good time,â and I understand that the warriors the ealdorman will command are not men whoâve taken kindly to me. I imagine that Oswy will be amongst their number. I can hardly wait.
