The convoy left the day after I beat Natasha in the beta challenge, and we all move at a slow, tortuous pace.

It seems the pack have finally realized what they’ve signed up for. This is war, pretty much. We are being led by a madman, going to attack the most prestigious leaders in our society. They have hundreds upon hundreds of guards. Not to mention the fact they have a giant fortress, too.

The alpha thinks he can win, and honestly, he has a pretty good shot. With all his grand claims of how he will rid the world of the human plague, creating even more land for wolves to walk upon, he has really got people riled up.

But they’ve seemed to have lost their gusto now. Maybe they are losing faith in my uncle; I can only hope.

I gaze around. Many walk on foot. Some in wolf form and others human. I spy Declan trudging along, never looking so goddamn miserable in his whole life. Then I spot Natasha, her eyes blazing and set forward.

I’m not sure what her personal beliefs are. She seems to agree with the alpha’s convictions, but she must have her own thoughts swirling around inside that white-blonde head somewhere.

She has to have some autonomy. She’s not like Declan and the rest; she’s not a sheep. She never was. Although I can’t stand her, I still hope she can be swayed to my side. Somehow.

All the girl wants is power and to be the best. If I can promise her that somehow, maybe I can get her to see eye to eye with me.

Her strength would come in handy.

Just then, her cold, amber gaze finds me, and her glare alone could incinerate me to ashes.

The bitch has always hated me. Even back when she wanted to mate with me, she hated my guts. Yet she was prepared to fuck me and make babies with me just so our hypothetical pups would have the best genes, and I shiver at the thought of procreating with someone like her.

Our offspring would have been lethal.

But right now, she is picturing all the ways she can murder me in my sleep, and I guess I should sleep with my eyes open from now on.

She only has herself to blame; the bitch should have known better than to go up against me in a beta challenge. Of course she was going to lose.

It happens before I realize. An arrow whizzes past my ear, taking out the eye of the wolf opposite from me, and he falls to the ground.

The convoy stops, staring at the fallen pack member in shock. No one moves, frozen in terror as it takes us a moment to register.

We are under attack.

I gaze at the smoke swirling from the dead shifter’s eye where the arrow punctured him, and it’s silver...

Humans are shooting at us with silver arrowheads. As if silver bullets weren’t bad enough.

Fuck my life and entire soul.

“Get down!” I scream, running forward to knock Declan Maloney to the ground.
