CHAPTER 21

The scattered mess of bodies from the Jiaolong River Sect lay in the dining hall. Only a few dark sect members lay slain on the floor, and Tony’s lifeless body lay among them.

We had seen the explosion high up on the mountain, but this was more than either of us expected.

I lifted Cara to her feet and placed an arm around her shoulders. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, seemingly overwhelmed by all that had unfolded.

Elder Xióng's voice echoed through the room. "Come around and gather!” He pointed his finger at the sect’s cultivators cowering on the floor. “Let's check them to see if they need any healing."

Brutus managed to pick up a table that had been thrown aside, setting it upright again. I followed suit, picking up unbroken chairs and sliding them underneath the tables while Cara checked on some of the injured cultivators. There was a sense of community in their attempts to restore peace to their home, yet when I gazed into each cultivator's eyes, I could see only fear and loss lurking beneath their expressions.

A few more Jiaolong River Sect cultivators came in through the broken door then, starting to assist in the cleanup and healing of those who were hurt.

I glanced down at Tony and turned to Elder Xióng. "What are we going to do with him and the dark sect? He's only one of the Triad bosses—will the other two come after us as well?"

Someone coughed and cleared his throat behind me. A chill spread across my back as I glanced over my shoulder to find that Tony was now standing where he had fallen.

He raised his hands and pressed his aura, pushing a shockwave blast back at all of us. We stumbled backward, running into some of the tables and knocking over chairs we had just set back up.

"I was waiting for all of our guests to arrive before I showed you my true power," Tony said, a smirk growing across his face. "I've told you before about my powers, but no one believed me."

A rippling quake of chi shot across the room toward Tony. He glanced toward Elder Xióng and lifted a finger, stopping the construct with a protective shield array around himself and his immediate surroundings.

Tony laughed. "I'm so thankful you've already corralled everyone here into this space. Now, let me show you what I am capable of!”

Glancing around the dining hall, Tony’s gaze looked past me and landed back on Brutus. "Oh, you are a promising young cultivator to come back from near death. I think I will take you again."

Brutus's eyes widened and he shook his head as Tony struck him with vindictive eyes. He raised his hands, but his shield formed too late.

"Step back!" I turned around and grabbed Cara away from Brutus moments before Brutus's head dropped to his chest as he reached for a dagger.

I glanced over to Elder Xióng as he sent chi attacks against Tony, but his shield was too high, blocking the chi constructs from Elder Xióng and another nearby cultivator.
