CHAPTER 8

Soren sat up in his bed and stretched, yesterday was his roughest here and Haggerty made him stay two weeks now past his initial leave date. Nell had gotten the chance to leave, sort of. Haggerty had used his power to send him off to become Infantry for a job well done which came with a bonus of a few more coins along with armor, a sword and any other gear he would need. Haggerty made Soren stay, two of the men that were in training to become Leftenants had left to join Haggerty and all of them wanted a piece of Soren once they had gotten their magic. Soren had a new group of Soldiers train with him, the worst of the worst so he lost almost all of his fights except when it was four on one with the new Champions. Haggerty eventually stopped letting him compete in the four on one fights with the newer Champions, only the two on one fights. Soren didn't use his magic except to further along his healing and that of the people next to him. The Mages only gave them the minimal amount of healing and Soren used that time to secretly cast enough to help out his fellow Soldiers. Yesterday they really needed it, Haggerty was releasing some of his Champions. He thought they could learn no more from fighting and needed the experience. Soren had heard that powerful people wanted to see how they perform in the field on campaign. Haggerty wanted to give them a final push and made them train harder than ever. Against the more experienced Champions, Soren had led every one against them.

Allen was a tough fight, he used his air magic more as defense and was able to jump and move around the field of battle and slowly pick them off. Sometimes he would use his air magic to separate one of them if they were out of place to take out. All of the Champions eventually figured out how to use their magic effectively when fighting a group and Soren had to admit that through all the pain, he was bit happy for them. They went from being pompous asses who enjoyed beating on people, to humbled, to fearsome fighters. Soren felt good watching them grow. Most of them would probably revert to being a knobber to those they felt were beneath them but at least they were humbled for a bit.

Soren had seen Taylor around a few times, the boy had come to watch Soren take on a few of the Champions. This time it looked like he was actually trying to learn something instead of just sneering. His status as a Caster meant he would be put in with the Mages to fight on one of the numerous campaigns. Since he had probably got his magic while he was younger, Soren thought the boy never bothered with learning how to fight. He probably just intimidated people with his magic and blasted those that wanted it.
