Chapter 12

Evan rolled onto the beach in the lead truck and saw the familiar faces of Preeda’s men already waiting. They were standing amidst a few dozen pallets of recently delivered contraband from one of Preeda’s contacts in Phuket, who provided prescription drugs stolen from apothecaries in Bangkok. The men were severing the manila rope securing the items on the pallets and tediously loading them onto the small motorboats for passage back to the freighter, which was anchored a half-mile distant.

Hopping out of his truck, Evan glanced around for signs of Preeda. He wasn’t hard to find as the lanky captain was the tallest figure amongst the diminutive Malaysian men scurrying like worker ants around the beach.

“Get the girls and dogs unloaded but hold off on the tiger for now,” said Evan to his two drivers.

Evan walked at a brisk pace. The cool sand pouring through his open-toed sandals was a welcome relief from the searing heat back at the stables. He walked past three men discussing the bets they’d wager on the weight of a large steel container until he came up next to Preeda. The man turned suddenly and greeted Evan with a toothy grin.

“It’s about time, old boy,” said Preeda, patting him on the shoulder.

“I’m not a day past twenty-seven, so I’m still a ways off from being ‘old.’”

“Well, I meant that in the sense of being wise, not archaic,” the weathered pirate said.

The two men walked side by side back to the trucks as Evan kept up with Preeda’s brisk pace. The old smuggler craned his head around at the workers unloading the trucks. “I see you are short a few men on this trip?”

Evan gave a jilted nod. “Yeah, coupla guys stayed back at the property to work on, uhm—” he paused to clear his throat while looking away “—expanding the holding pens and reinforcing the metal entrance gates.”

“I just put money into having all that upgraded last year.”

Evan bit his lower lip. “The jungle rot in some of the upright beams has wreaked havoc on some of the supports so I figure it’d be better to take care of it now, in between girls arriving, than risk having one of them escape somehow.”

Preeda raised an eyebrow then turned his attention to the newly unloaded crates of women near the trucks. “So, I’m told that you only have nine girls for me this trip.” It was clearly a question, with a hint of concern underlying Preeda’s voice.

“Nine this time—but they are well worth it and will put some significant currency in your pockets. They are very unique girls, trust me.” He gave Preeda a sideways glance to read his demeanor.

“I like consistent numbers, as do my buyers. It used to be you always provided reliable inventory but this past year things have been unpredictable.”

Evan hastily motioned to the two wire crates next to the truck. “These are the two American women I mentioned. The rest of the women are French, Italian, and Chinese but there’s not much special about them.
