Chapter Thirteen

Clare raced through the nearly empty streets from Greenwood to the U District, skidding around corners and taking every shortcut she could remember. In her mind, she replayed her short conversation with Libby, always getting stuck on the part where Libby was calling her friend’s name, her gasp, and the loud clunk before their connection was broken. She would blame herself for this, no matter what had happened after Libby’s phone went dead, because she had brought Libby into her dangerous world. Later, though. Now she had to get to Libby, to help her or rescue her. Self-focus and self-blame had to be secondary to finding her.

There was a chance none of this was related to the Turnbow case and Libby’s peripheral involvement with it, but Gould Hall? A missing person who had been with Libby earlier in the evening? The connections felt too strong to be coincidence. Whatever was going on tonight, Clare had brought it to Libby’s doorstep when she had walked into her office and agreed to her offer of help with the investigation.

The roads were lined with shadows and darkened businesses until Clare turned the corner and reached Gould Hall. Several patrol cars were parked along the curb, their lights flashing in eerie silence. The police station—usually dimly lit with a skeleton crew during the night—was bright as day, with silhouettes passing the windows in greater numbers than normal for the time.

Clare parked behind one of the police vehicles, her car skipping onto the curb and thudding back to the pavement because she had taken the corner too hot. She jumped out and ran toward Gould, not even pausing long enough to shut her car door. As she came around the building, she could see the overlapping circles made by the portable spotlights.

Images hit her mind and were flung away as she searched for the only one that mattered. The forensics team. Cappy, kneeling near the building. A body, propped unnaturally against the glass—no, not Libby. Long hair, a different shape. Cappy stiffened slightly and then turned to look over her shoulder. She rose and came over to Clare, her eyes rapidly skimming over Clare’s face.

“She’s fine, Sawyer. She’s in the station and has a friend with her.”

Clare nodded, fighting back the pang of tears and holding herself upright out of sheer willpower when every muscle seemed to sag with relief. Libby was okay. There was another dead body. Clare needed to get to work, do her job. She cleared her throat, trying to formulate the right questions to get up to speed with what had happened tonight.

“Um…” She took a deep breath and was about to start again when Cappy interrupted her.

“Go see her. See for yourself that she’s all right. You’re no use out here until you do.”

Clare wanted to protest. She was a professional with a job to do. Cappy didn’t need to baby her. She could push through this. There was no sign of annoyance or contempt in Cappy’s expression, though. Clare only saw understanding.
