Liv continued to refuse to go to the Halloween dance at school, but she kept her word about carving pumpkins with me. We decided to work on them the week before Halloween, on all the days leading up to the day. Her grandmother let us take the week off at the cafe and Liv helped me before and after swim team practice. It took forty pumpkins to create a path from my door to the street. I used all the pumpkins from the small patch in my garden, and Mrs. Wickstrom gave us six from hers, we bought the rest at the Farmer’s Market.

We spent the time watching Halloween themed and scary movies, while snacking on roasted pumpkin seeds and pizza. Both of our hands were red and sore from all the carving we had been doing. It was great. I had missed Liv so much.

We ended up with pumpkins carved with all kinds of faces. There were happy ones and scary ones. Liv even carved a few to resemble cartoon characters. We started out doing super detailed and intricate designs, to getting so tired we did the last half with traditional triangle shaped eyes and noses with zig zag mouths.

Sometime around carving the last few pumpkins, I asked Liv if she had been practicing magic at all.

“A little,” she said, looking up at me. “A few spells here and there. Nothing major.”

“Yeah, us too. A few things here and there. We should try to get the coven together and do something bigger.”

“Oh?” she said, raising one eyebrow. “What do you have in mind?”

“We need to strengthen our individual abilities, and come together to do something big,” I said, hoping she would have an idea that I could agree to, because I had nothing.

She sat up straight and stared at me with anticipation. She had all her attention on me, waiting for what my plan was. I took a deep breath, trying to desperately think of something to say.

“What’s something you always wanted to try?” I asked, attempting to lead her to think of something.

“Uh, fly, breathe under water, create a love potion, bring back the dead, conjure money, know the answers to every question on every test, win all the time at everything, make things move with my mind, astral projection...”

“Woah, okay...” I said, stopping her. She would have gone on forever. “So, I didn’t have anything specific in mind. But we do need to focus on our own abilities and strengths. Meranda can breathe under water, and your element is water so my guess is that you can probably do it, too. Maybe Meranda can teach you?” I suggested. She seemed to consider it for a second, then I sensed her anger.

“Not a chance.”

“Why not? What is your problem with her?” I asked.

“I don’t like her. I don’t trust her. And I was here first, but now she shows up and takes over everything. My friends, my team, my captain position, breathing under water even. I tried that for months, probably even a year.
