CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

The girls were learning a lot faster than I'd expected. Then again, most new wixen I'd known had been kids, so our lessons had been spaced out a lot more, and built up differently. But after spending the last two days helping my coven figure out how to attack with their magic? Those women had been just a little too enthusiastic about it.

Jayden didn't have it quite as easy. Their magic was all based on "forcing" ghosts to help. Jayden refused. They wanted to ask, to trade, and to cooperate with their spirits. And, much to my surprise, it seemed to be working.

Peggy, as his main ghost was called, was more than willing to drag others along with her. A pair named Bobby and Clint seemed overly enthusiastic to appear on command for practice. They also made it clear they had personal reasons for wanting to fuck up the old coven. A werewolf who'd died in the Summerpoint fires and Nancy's discarded and disappeared lover? I bet they did!

They freaked me right the fuck out, but Jayden seemed to actually like their new "friends." Then again, if Syl could talk to trees, then there was no reason Jayden couldn't talk to dead people, right? And it seemed the more freedom those two wixen gave their helpers, the more the helpers offered to do on their own. A win-win if I'd ever heard of one.

The problem had been teaching Beth and Erika to work together. Not because they couldn't. Instead, the issue was they had too much fun with it! I had a pretty good cut on my forearm from an ice blade, but I was no longer worried about that pair getting hit by any of the old coven. Everything else around them, maybe, but those two would certainly do quite a bit of damage.

Even better, it seemed Nora intuitively understood her magic. She also had even more liberty with it than Syl. If Nora wanted to, she could make anything happen with a pattern. It didn't matter if that was stomping her foot, spinning around, or snapping. Multiples of three seemed to work best, but she was inventive and damned good at thinking on the fly.

Me? I was exhausted.

Oh, I'd never tell my coven that, but I'd been burning the candle at both ends to make sure they were safe. During the day, I was working on Syl's town spell. Between that, I was doing what I could to keep tabs on Nancy, Dare, and Kingsley. In the evenings, I was using more magic than I ever had, so when nighttime finally rolled around, I fell into bed hard.

You should let me help more, Twig chided as he curled up against my chest.

With a soft chuckle, I shifted my arm to lay across his little body. "How can you help me, Twig? I already know my spells."

I'm a familiar now, he reminded me. I can help you reach more magic and do it easier. You just have to let me know when you're straining.
