Chapter Fourteen

Siobhan

“Hey, I know you.”

At first, I didn’t realize the person speaking meant me. I focused on scraping the last bit of fruit off Alys’s plate and enjoying the meal. Not the best breakfast I’d ever eaten on a road trip but not bad.

“I’m talking to you, witch.” The voice was unfamiliar.

The words were followed by a rough yank on my overalls strap. Instinct kicked in and I held the attacker’s hand on my shoulder as I rose out of the seat like Venus from the seafoam with PMS. I twisted my assailant’s wrist as I went until she released me.

“You’re one of them sisters. The witches that overthrew the magic council.” Dark piggy eyes narrowed on me.

Shoot, so much for my disguise. “Not here,” I hissed. “You don’t want the mortals to—”

“What mortals?” The bear of a woman who looked like she ate rusty nails for breakfast, laughed. “There ain’t no mortals ‘round these parts. We’ve run them out.”

“This here is pack territory,” a short woman wearing a plaid shirt who stood behind the counter said. “Open to all supes who’ve been displaced.”

“Displaced because of you.” Bear woman got in my face just as the little bell over the diner’s only exit jingled.

“Cheryl, what’s going on?” Alys asked. In her normal voice, drat her. I’d been trying to convince her to add some Southern honey to her speech, but she’d ignored me. At least she’d remembered not to use my real name.

“Look, lady, I don’t know who you think you are, but you have the wrong—”

She clocked me.

Alys yelled as I went down. My head spun and my jaw ached. There was a rumble of thunder, not from outside but above our heads, in the building. Chairs scraped and people— shifters apparently—threw themselves into the fracas.

My ears rang and I crawled on my hands and knees, occasionally getting stepped on. I thought I recognized my sister’s boot and was about to grab it and transport the two of us away from the diner when someone jerked me up by my overalls.

It was bear woman. I dangled impotently off the ground as she snarled up into my face.

And began to change before my eyes.

Bear woman—she really was a bear shifter—snapped and snarled as her teeth grew and those dark eyes flashed gold.

Shit shit shit.

I tried to travel. Chocolate knew I had enough fear pumping through my system, but her grip on my clothing didn’t relent. Transformation done, the paw that wasn’t holding me pulled back. Wicked dark claws twice the length of my fingers gleamed in the fluorescent lights.

I shut my eyes, not wanting to see my death blow coming.

Electricity struck and my eyes popped. Alys, hair streaming back on a phantom wind, had both her hands on the bear shifter’s shoulders. And her hands crackled with the harnessed power of a lightning bolt. Because she held me, I could feel the zap, but to me, it felt like pins and needles. All the hairs were raised along my arm.
