Chapter Eighteen

A rugged and burly man stepped out of the driver’s seat of the black Thunderbird and entered the bodega. With his leather vest, long beard, and tattoos all over his arms, Zack thought he’d be a better fit on a motorcycle than in a sports car. Actually, he fit in well in this seedier part of Las Vegas. For all Zack knew, he could have been a good person. There was no way of knowing anything about him, but the intense look on Amelia’s face showed that she had a great interest in the guy.

“Okay,” Amelia sang once the man was inside the bodega. “Now’s our chance.”

“Our chance for what?” Zack peeked around. Except for a homeless guy sleeping in front of a high rise and a couple shouting at each other on a bench, there was no one else around.

Amelia gripped Zack’s arm and tugged him. “Every day at this time, that man pulls in front and leaves the engine running while he runs in to buy a pack of cigarettes. I picked up on his pattern with one grand idea poking around in my brain. Today, we satisfy the urge.”

“I don’t understand. The urge for what?”

“I want to see the inside of that vehicle.” Amelia ran across the street toward the car, pulling Zack by the arm along with her. “But we have to move fast, so come on.”

“Hold on. Wait a second!” Zack stopped in his tracks, which also halted Amelia. They were midway along the street. “We can’t just get into someone’s car. That’s wrong on so many levels. Besides, I’m sure the doors are locked.”

“Sometimes we have to live a little.” Amelia stepped to Zack’s right side, never letting go of her grip. “I want to feel the upholstery.”

“But Amelia, it’s illegal—”

“It’ll be fine. Trust me!”

Zack did trust her, although for the life of him, he couldn’t understand why. What she was proposing went against every moral principle his uncle drilled into him as a child. He needed to stand firm and tell her “No.” But her smile, her touch, it was like Isis’ but different in a way he couldn’t explain. He couldn’t bear the idea of Amelia ending their friendship. Damn, his thoughts should have been on Isis. In fact, he should have been with her right now. She was the only girl in his life that he found so intoxicating. At least until he met Amelia, and that thought filled him with guilt.

Zack reached into his jacket pocket. His hand touched something square and solid with a smooth surface except for the five-crystal pattern. It was Isis’ birthday present. The memory box was still in there. It fit in the palm of his hand. Isis would never break into a car. For that matter, neither would he. Yet when Zack tried to envision Isis’ look of disappointment, he could only see Amelia’s face filled with excitement. The only thing that could wipe away that excitement right now would be if Zack said no.
