Chapter 8

"No, no, no!" I exclaim, not even bothering to keep my voice down. "I thought we were moving forward. How is this possible?"

"I don't think it is."

"What?" I spin around, clearly seeing Eric for the first time in hours. He's calm, as usual, as I rage. "We're freaking outside again! We must've turned somewhere. Or went up when we thought we were going down. Or. Wait." I push past him and try for the door, only to find that it has disappeared. "This isn't possible. I don't get it."

"Cordy, look." I face him again and then follow where he's pointing to the sky. I can see the tops of trees and the slight glow all around me like I would see from a moon. Except I can't see the moon. Or the stars.

"I think this is just another one of the rooms. It's supposed to make us feel lost."

"Well, mission accomplished."

I'm getting emotional now, and I don't like it. But the weight of everything sits heavy on my shoulders. My leg is hurting, and I'm just so tired. I don't think I've realized how much I'm carrying until this exact moment when I let myself feel it.

This is why I have to push it all down. This is why I have to pretend that I'm stronger than I am. Because the moment I am honest with myself, the crushing weight is back, and I can't breathe. So much is resting on us finding the relic. So much is on me to be able to use them to stop the king. It feels like the walls are closing in all around me, and I'm not even inside anymore. Or whatever this is.

"Hey." Eric steps in front of me, reaching out. I glance up, finding emotion on his face that he typically keeps put away. There's concern there, concern for me, but also determination. "We'll get through this. We will. You are not alone."

He's said this once before. Back when I was still inclined not to trust my own judgement. Especially after all the doubts Kelsey planted in my mind. I didn't believe him then, but I do believe him now. Not exactly sure how that makes sense, considering some of what Kelsey talked about is true. He did lie to me.

But I also can't deny that he's been there for me, every single step of the way. I don't think I could've made it this far without him by my side. Maybe I would've. I'd like to think so. But it would've been harder, and it would've been different.

So, when I move toward him, I'm not really thinking about it. I'm acting.

My hug takes him by surprise but only for a spilt second. As I hold onto him around the neck, his arms come around my middle. He pulls me in tight, and I feel a slight tremor under my fingertips as they graze his skin. He half lifts me off the ground, my body molded to his. I have no idea how long we stay like this, but I can feel him everywhere.
