The list went on for about twenty different items. The last one was simply, “have a boyfriend.”

It wasn’t a part of the main list for a second reason, too. I planned to do everything on that list before my birthday. That had a deadline.

These items did not have a deadline.

I didn’t know if I’d ever do any of these things.

I gulped, pushing my lips together, and folded the page up again.

“Have you never done any of those things before?” JJ asked from next to me, and I startled at his voice.

I glanced up at him, his big beautiful blue eyes staring down at me with – ugh, I didn’t know. Pity? I looked away again quickly. “No, I haven’t.”

“Oh.” He sounded genuinely surprised.

I could tell he wanted to ask more, but wasn’t sure how. I sighed. “Ask whatever you want to ask. I won’t be offended.”

JJ was quiet for a long time. Finally, he said, “Why haven’t you done any of those things, if you want to do them?”

I let out a quick, humourless laugh. “Because I need someone else to actually do them with?” I sighed. “I can’t talk to people easily.”

“You talked to me just fine!” JJ rebutted.

“Yeah, well, we had the kittens as a buffer. I could talk to you, because I was following the script I follow whenever I work at the shelter.” I looked at JJ again. “We focused on the kittens, and conversation just kind of came naturally after that. With other people, I struggle for ages to say something without stuttering. I didn’t make friends with Cedric and Zea for months after I’d moved in, and we only really became friends because the lockdown forced us together.” I gestured at the playpen. “Just like how the kittens forced the two of us to be friends.”

JJ shook his head. “So no one’s ever hit on you?”

I squirmed in my seat. This conversation was so uncomfortable. “No.”

JJ shook his head again, leaning back. “I don’t believe that.”

I felt a spike of annoyance. “You don’t have to believe it. It’s true!”

“I think people probably have hit on you before, and you just didn’t notice.”

I shot him a glare, not knowing what to say to that. It could be true, but I highly doubted it.

JJ leaned forward toward me. “You’re a very attractive guy, Seb.”

I shook my head. I knew, on some level, that I was cute. But cute didn’t mean people wanted to date me. Cute didn’t change the fact that I was generally too shy to function around other people – especially when I found those people attractive.

I wasn’t going to say any of that, though. It’d sound like I was just making excuses. So I just shrugged and said, “Thanks.”

JJ must have interpreted my shrug as disbelief or self-consciousness. “I mean it.” He put a hand on my knee – large and warm and reassuring. “Come on. You’re a really attractive guy, and anyone would be lucky to get to do anything on that list with you.
