The list went on for about twenty different items. The last one was simply, âhave a boyfriend.â
It wasnât a part of the main list for a second reason, too. I planned to do everything on that list before my birthday. That had a deadline.
These items did not have a deadline.
I didnât know if Iâd ever do any of these things.
I gulped, pushing my lips together, and folded the page up again.
âHave you never done any of those things before?â JJ asked from next to me, and I startled at his voice.
I glanced up at him, his big beautiful blue eyes staring down at me with â ugh, I didnât know. Pity? I looked away again quickly. âNo, I havenât.â
âOh.â He sounded genuinely surprised.
I could tell he wanted to ask more, but wasnât sure how. I sighed. âAsk whatever you want to ask. I wonât be offended.â
JJ was quiet for a long time. Finally, he said, âWhy havenât you done any of those things, if you want to do them?â
I let out a quick, humourless laugh. âBecause I need someone else to actually do them with?â I sighed. âI canât talk to people easily.â
âYou talked to me just fine!â JJ rebutted.
âYeah, well, we had the kittens as a buffer. I could talk to you, because I was following the script I follow whenever I work at the shelter.â I looked at JJ again. âWe focused on the kittens, and conversation just kind of came naturally after that. With other people, I struggle for ages to say something without stuttering. I didnât make friends with Cedric and Zea for months after Iâd moved in, and we only really became friends because the lockdown forced us together.â I gestured at the playpen. âJust like how the kittens forced the two of us to be friends.â
JJ shook his head. âSo no oneâs ever hit on you?â
I squirmed in my seat. This conversation was so uncomfortable. âNo.â
JJ shook his head again, leaning back. âI donât believe that.â
I felt a spike of annoyance. âYou donât have to believe it. Itâs true!â
âI think people probably have hit on you before, and you just didnât notice.â
I shot him a glare, not knowing what to say to that. It could be true, but I highly doubted it.
JJ leaned forward toward me. âYouâre a very attractive guy, Seb.â
I shook my head. I knew, on some level, that I was cute. But cute didnât mean people wanted to date me. Cute didnât change the fact that I was generally too shy to function around other people â especially when I found those people attractive.
I wasnât going to say any of that, though. Itâd sound like I was just making excuses. So I just shrugged and said, âThanks.â
JJ must have interpreted my shrug as disbelief or self-consciousness. âI mean it.â He put a hand on my knee â large and warm and reassuring. âCome on. Youâre a really attractive guy, and anyone would be lucky to get to do anything on that list with you.
