Chapter Eighteen

She hadn’t expected things to go so smoothly, but then as Alston had told her, as she herself knew. Amelia and Ryan were destined. This marriage was an unplanned one, but it would do what they might not have had the courage to do in the end.

It would bring them together, giving them time to learn each other, to grow. That they hardly knew each other was a plus. That would keep things interesting for a while.

With a smile, Genny glanced at Ryan. “Ryan, can I have a word?” Genny asked as she got to her feet. “Excuse us.”

Ryan put her napkin on the table and rose to follow her from the room.

“What is it?” Ryan asked once they were outside and several steps away from the door.

“I’m going to start to shift control of the inn to Amelia sooner than expected,” Genny said. “I want to be able to see how she handles things.”

Ryan nodded. “I don’t see a problem with that.”

“I know she’s capable, but I haven’t had enough time to teach her everything that I wanted to,” she said. “And there is the coven. It’s not going to work out, but Amelia will have her own life separate from that, and I think as your Queen, she’ll have her hands full anyway.”

“How long have you known?” Ryan asked. “About this arrangement?”

“A while,” she said. “I wasn’t sure it would take place, that Mihai would tell you, but why not? You stand to gain control of a great deal that’s in my territory.”

“I—”

“As such, I expect you to take good care of Amelia, shield her if necessary.”

“I would never allow anyone to hurt her,” Ryan assured her. “anymore than I ever would.”

“That’s probably debatable,” Genny said making a face. “I’m sure some of the things I’ve heard about you are true.”

“My sex life isn’t your business.”

“I suppose not but Amelia would be the perfect submissive if you were actually looking for one.”

“I agree,” Ryan said with a shrug.

Genny grunted. “Don’t abuse her, Ryan. Don’t destroy her trust in you.”

“I have no plans to.”

“I—is she feeding? I’ll need to arrange service to prevent her from harming anyone.”

“Ask Amelia,” she said.

Genny studied her. “She’s not forthcoming.”

“Then, I suggest you check back in with her,” Ryan said. “I’m her lover, not your snitch.”

Genny smiled faintly. “Did Mihai tell you it was Amelia?”

“No.”

“I’m surprised,” Genny murmured. “What happened at the house this morning? My security chief said Bentley allowed friends of yours onto the property. They wanted to repair a window.”

“Someone tried to break in, and they left a dead animal.”

She sighed. “It was probably Rider or Annie. They both want control of Thistle-Rose. I asked Council security to check out the guest house for clues. They’ll report to me, and I’ll inform you of anything you need to know.”

“Fine. The windows were replaced, but I’ll want them to go back out tomorrow to secure things. I don’t want this happening again.”

Miss Genny shrugged. “As you’re marrying Amelia, I don’t see why not, but she won’t be staying out there anymore.
