▴ DESCRIPTION: Aspens can grow upwards of eighty feet. The bark is smooth, pale, and olive in color.
▴ HABITAT: They prefer forest edges and well-drained soil.
▴ RANGE: They can be found in southern Canada and the northern third of the United States, following the Rocky Mountains southward.
▴ FOOD: The inner bark, although often bitter, is fit for consumption.
▴ MEDICINE: Aspens contain resinous buds that can be used as an antiseptic. The inner bark or leaves may be steeped in water for a pain-relieving tea.2
▴ UTILITY:
▴ Members of the poplar family provide excellent materials for friction kits. These trees are also a wonderful choice for coal burning.
