Chapter 15

Bright light spills into the room, rousing me from the much needed sleep after all of yesterday’s wine. At the feeling of the jackhammer reverberating inside my skull, I make a vow to not drink so much ever again. Or at least for the rest of this assignment. I’m going to need a gallon of wine with Jane when I get home to sort through all the emotions I’ve been having here.

“Morning.” The sound of Kai’s velvety voice causes an increase to both my pulse and the throbbing in my head. The last one is likely also a cause of the wine, but still. I pull a pillow over my head with a groan, trying to block out the sun and headache and the feelings I’m doing terribly at controlling.

It is definitely safer to stay hidden under this pillow than acknowledge those feelings. Even if staying in bed would cause us to miss an item on Ella’s itinerary, which would definitely be multiple points against me.

Okay, so not safer to stay here under the pillow after all.

I sit up, rubbing at eyes that feel swollen.

“How did you sleep?” Kai asks, amusement dripping in his tone. I crack open my heavy eyelids and stare blankly at him.

His broad shoulder is leaning against the doorway, a mug of coffee in his hand. He smiles at me like friends do, all polite kindness. Like he didn’t confess his jealousy and it didn’t send me reeling yesterday. Does he even remember? Does he regret it? Did I dream it?

Instead of asking any of those incriminating questions, I ask, “How did you get out of bed without me noticing?”

“You sleep like the dead apparently,” he says around the rim of the coffee mug as he takes a sip.

Another bout of pulsing in my head. I groan. “I feel like the dead.”

He gestures his mug to the general area beside me. “I left pain relievers and a glass of water on the nightstand for you.”

Glancing to my right, I find two tablets beside a full glass. And a cup of coffee that’s light enough of a color that I know he added cream to it, just the way I like it. My heart warms at this thoughtfulness.

But also, thank god. I really need to have my head on absolutely straight today to keep him out of my mind as I focus on this assignment. The first way to get it together is to kick this headache.

“Thanks, Dr. Kai.” Once I down the medicine and the water, I sit up in bed, resting my back against the headboard as I impatiently await the relief. Gripping the warm mug in my hand, I take a sip, already feeling revived from the caffeine. Kai’s phone dings, and he pulls it out of his pocket. When he smiles at the screen, I narrow my eyes, trying to deduce who could possibly have him smiling like that. My mind flashes back to that Instagram photo with the redhead, and his comment about Brianna Beckett on the plane.
