Elk Cove Vineyards’ tasting room offers balcony views of manicured vineyards and rugged forests. Lisa D. Holmes.

As the winemaker and owner of Elk Cove Vineyard, Adam’s time is divided between duties such as winemaking, overseeing all operations, land acquisition and traveling to promote Elk Cove wines. When time permits, he enjoys socializing with friends and family. For example, the night before our interview, Adam’s wife and children all went to Luisa Ponzi and Eric Hamacher’s home for a dinner party. Luisa made fresh pasta. Dave Paige, of Adelsheim, was also there with his wife. All four winemakers brought a bottle of their 2012 Rose.

The experience of the Willamette Valley in general is a very personal one. Any visitor will find that it lacks the corporate-owned feel. You can actually visit a winery and find yourself in the cellar with the winemaker or in the garden talking to a founder. Adam said with a laugh that once he met a visitor who walked into the tasting room and told him that she had just met his gardener and that she was a really lovely lady. “I just smiled, but I felt like saying that lovely lady is the founder of this winery.” It was Pat, of course.

When asked what he thinks about most, Adam said his children. “My wife and I will bring them to the winery on Sundays, and we all work together. They are young, and they think about professions such as firefighters and teachers, and I am slowly trying to let them see the potential for being part of the wine community. I’m secretly hoping one of them will take over where I leave off.”—VP
