“That’s where they found him,” Iscia said, pointing at the floor in front of them.

There was a large square hole in the floor. William estimated that the hole was about the same size as the slab the old man had been stuck in.

“What happened to him?” William said.

“Someone ambushed him and shot him with some kind of ray,” Iscia said. “It was meant to kill him, but he survived. However, he was fused into the floor. They had to cut out a block and move him to a laboratory, where they’re trying to free him.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?” William asked.

“It’s supposed to be top secret,” she said. “But I’m telling you now. That must count for something?”

William nodded, walking over to the edge and looking into the hole.

“Do you know who did it?” he asked.

She shook her head.

“Do you know why?” William said.

Iscia was about to answer, when she was interrupted by the sound of footsteps.

William turned and saw Freddy coming toward them. Iscia moved to stand beside William as Freddy came over and stopped, looking at William.

“Exciting . . . isn’t it?” Freddy threw out his arms like a king showing someone his kingdom. “All this fantastic tech. And that hole.” He pointed at the square hole in the floor. “Someone materialized from nowhere and zapped poor old Pontus into the floor. I knew you’d find this place interesting. With all the codes and stuff.”

William didn’t say anything. He still didn’t understand why Freddy was acting so friendly. It was a big contrast to the last time he had been at the Institute.

Freddy looked at Iscia. “Did you show him the orb yet?” he asked.

“What orb?” She looked puzzled.

“William loves orbs.” Freddy walked past the hole and in between two large shelves. “Come on. I’ll show him!”

William looked at Iscia.

“We should leave,” she said.

William felt a faint tingling in his belly.

It grew in strength, and the vibrations started traveling up his spine.

It wasn’t an attack.

It was that other feeling . . . the one he got when he was tackling codes. It was like an invisible force pulled him forward, and he had no choice but to start walking.

“Where are you going?” he heard Iscia say from behind him.

“I don’t know. Something’s happening.”

He moved through the various display cases in the same direction Freddy had gone, stopping when he got to the other end of the room. It was darker there and seemed to be a less used part of the storage.

William stood there as the vibrations filled his body. In front of him were rows of old glass cabinets. Some of them were covered with dusty cotton tarps.

“Where did Freddy go?” Iscia asked, stopping next to William.

“Dunno,” William said, trying to control his vibrations.

“This is the really old stuff,” Iscia said.

“I thought everything down here was old?”

“This stuff is so old, it’s undatable,” she said.

“Over here.” Freddy’s voice came from somewhere in the darkness.

William moved in the direction of Freddy’s voice. His eyes had adapted to the dark now, and he spotted Freddy standing by an old cabinet.
