Fields, grasslands, prairies, open brush and woodlands, roadsides and other open areas. Spring, summer. Common.

An erect perennial, typically unbranched, or weakly branched, with leafy, pubescent stems to 3 feet tall. Leaves opposite, on short petioles, lanceolate, to 3½ inches long and 1 inch wide, bases tapering, margins serrate to entire, tips pointed. Stems terminating in short, crowded spikes of roundish flowering heads. Flowers creamy yellow to white, heavily spotted, bilabiate to 1 inch long, lower lip 3-lobed with middle lobe larger than others, bracts dusty white. Common throughout majority of state. Absent in far West Texas. Usually found in sandy soils.
