Goddamn, that girl can move. The thought comes unbidden as I take a drink of my beer.

Leaning against the half wall that separates the dance floor from the rest of the building, I take in the sight in front of me. There’s not a single person in this place that could tear my eyes away from Delia Danvers’ ass. Poured into a pair of blue jeans, her lean curves call to me like a beacon in a storm.

Watching her dance with June and Louise, big ol’ smile on her face, thumbs tucked into her belt loops…well, it feels more like a privilege than anything. A miracle, maybe.

June and Grady invited Delia, Louise, Beau, and me to the city to go to the biggest line dancing bar in the Midwest. The Honky Tonk Haunt attracts all sorts of folks, but it’s mainly city people who want a little taste of the simple life. I can’t blame them either—there’s nothing like watching a pretty girl strut around a dance floor in boots to a Shania Twain song. Pair that with a cheap beer and good company, and you’ve got yourself the makings of a perfect night.

I think Grady and Beau would agree with me, since we’re all panting after our girls like dogs in heat. Beau would deny it tonight I think, just to keep the mood high, but the more time he spends with Louise, the harder it is for him. The problem with Beau is that he’s a perfectionist. If he’s going to do something, he’s going to do it right. And Louise is, by far, the most important thing to him. He won’t make a move until he thinks everything is right. I hate to break it to him, but that doesn’t usually happen.

I think Delia and I are a great example of loving someone in spite of your circumstances. Things have almost never been easy for us, but it’s the being apart that really does us in. Truthfully, I’d rather have a thousand bad days with Delia than not have her at all.

The song ends and the girls bound over to us, all smiles and breathless giggles.

June slides right into Grady’s waiting arms, and it’s honestly so nice to see the two of them happy. I don’t know Grady well, but I can tell he’s a good guy. And June deserves someone she can let her guard down around. Maple Creek was always too hard on her.

Delia bounds up to me, leaping into my arms and wrapping her thighs around my waist. I’m nearly knocked backward by the force of it.

“We need more drinks!” She shouts over the music.

But I don’t really process what she wants with her in my arms like this. Running up to me and jumping into me like we don’t have a chasm of time between us. This feels so natural, so irreplaceable, that I can’t believe I ever found the strength to leave her. Now that I have her again, nothing short of an act of God could pull me away from her.
