âYou wanted to see me?â Line asked.
Eden looked up in surprise. She hadnât heard him come into the parlor. Tb her relief, she saw he was alone. Fiona must have told Marcus to make himself scarce. âYes, please come in,â she said a little breathlessly.
He took off his Stetson, hung it on a peg by the door, and ran a hand through his hair. Tentatively, as if not quite certain of his welcome, he came closer.
âSit down,â she said, patting the sofa beside her.
He walked over and lowered himself slowly, almost reluctantly, onto the seat. The gun he still wore drew her eye, reminding her of the way he had used it to protect her this afternoon. Her stomach did a nasty little flip at the memory, and her heart clenched with pain. As if sensing her reaction, he hastily unbuckled the gunbelt and removed it, laying it on the floor beside the sofa, out of sight. When her gaze met his again, his expression was guarded.
Eden swallowed nervously, resisting the urge to throw herself into his arms. They had too many things to settle first. âI never thanked you for what you did this afternoon.â
âNo need. Anybody else wouldâve done the same thing.â
âI donât think so. Alvin Blaine was a very dangerous man. It took a lot of courage to face him.â âOr a lot of stupidity. I wasnât trying to be a hero. I just wanted to get you away from him.â
âI know. Iâ¦â Eden shivered at the memory. âDid you hear what he was saying to me?â
âA little,â he said curtly, telling her heâd heard more than a little.
âI donât think Iâve ever been so frightened in my life. I tried to fight him, but of course I couldnât, and after what you showed me, I knew it was hopeless to even try.â
He looked quickly away, as if he were embarrassed, and Eden sighed in frustration. This wasnât going at all the way sheâd planned. She wanted him to put his arms around her and tell her everything was going to be all right. Instead he seemed to be growing more distant every minute, and everything she said made things worse.
âLine?â Warily, he turned back to face her. âYou may be right that most men would have tried to rescue me, but not many men wouldâve been able to do it the way you did.â
âOh, youâre right there,â he exclaimed bitterly. âNot many men can kill the way I can.â
Eden stared at him in astonishment. âIf you hadnât killed him first, he wouldâve killed us both. You didnât have a choice!â
âNo, I didnât,â he replied, jumping up and jamming his hands into his pockets. âSo now Iâve got two men after me for killing their brothers.â
He paced restlessly while Eden gaped, unable to comprehend his mood. âAre you afraid?â she asked at last.
He gave a bark of derisive laughter. âHell, yes, Iâm afraid! Iâm afraid Iâll have to kill two more men just because I already killed their brothers.
