I close my eyes as the wind whips my hair against my cheek. We left New York City twenty minutes ago, and as soon as the traffic started to thin, I took an audible breath.
That drew a glance from the man sitting next to me, who is handling this car like heâs been behind the wheel of it for years.
I saw his hands shake when he first pulled away from the curb in front of my building in Manhattan. Once we were on our way, his posture loosened, and he relaxed.
âWhat happened with you and McCabe?â
That question opens my eyes, sending my hand up to slide my sunglasses off. âWhat?â
Daniels glances at me, but his eyes are hidden behind his sunglasses. âYou heard me, Gina. What happened between you and Brogan McCabe?â
I gaze at the road ahead and the back of the RV cruising down the highway in front of us. âThatâs none of your business.â
âI made it my business when I broke the rules.â
Again, I look at him but turn in my seat, being mindful of my seatbelt. âWhat does that mean?â
He keeps his eyes on the road. âIt doesnât matter.â
âYes, it does,â I say. âYou canât toss that out and not explain it. What rules did you break, and how the hell does it relate to my ex?â
âDrop it, Gina.â
âYouâre the one who brought it up,â I point out. âActually, why did you bring it up? Why now?â
âBecause youâre stuck in this car and canât escape.â
I bow my head and smile. âWhat rules, Daniel? Tell me what you did.â
When I look, the fingers on his left hand are drumming a beat on the steering wheel. He offers his right hand to me. âIâll tell you. This is like boarding the subway for me, so hold my hand.â
I want to laugh, but I have no idea if heâs being serious or not, so I take his hand in mine.
He squeezes mine gently. âHe was my client at the time.â
âWhat?â I canât hide my surprise at that admission, so I donât even try. âHe was your client?â
He nods. âI terminated our contract as soon as I got back to my office the day we argued about him. When you told me you were falling hard and fast for McCabe, I knew I couldnât sit idly by and watch that happen.â
I try to follow, but Iâm lost. âPlease explain more.â
His gaze darts from my face back to the road. âHe was living on the fortune his parents gave him when he turned twenty-five, but he had blown through that. He spent most of it on luxury vacations and gifts for women.â
During our time together, Brogan gave me nothing, not even a single red rose. More often than not, when we went out for dinner, it was because I had signed a sponsorship deal with the establishment. Our meals and drinks were covered in addition to a healthy deposit in my bank account. In exchange, I had to post a picture or video to social media showing my boyfriend and I sitting at a table having a great time.
