13. LONER

Ryan swore, threw down the safety goggles and hurled the piece of metal tubing into a corner. The engineering block was empty so no-one was watching as he threw his fourth tantrum of the day. No matter how carefully he tried to use the machinery, nothing seemed to go right. Drilling holes into the metal pipes was far from simple, and they kept ending up in the wrong places. The frame for the buggy would never fit together. He’d already wasted more than half his time.

Come on, Ryan, you can do this.

The evidence suggested otherwise. So far only two metal pipes had been secured. Everything else was in a worse state than when he’d first picked it up.

That wasn’t because he was slacking. Other than a quick break for lunch, he’d been hard at it, determined to get the buggy finished. He needed to impress his team, or at least to keep them off his back. But he sucked at engineering.

His frustration had built to such a level that he knew he couldn’t go on any longer. He decided to take a break, to calm down.

Besides, he was desperate to find out what had happened to Lee. He figured that if he made his way to the medical room, he might find something out. It was worth a shot.

Ryan threw all the materials for the buggy back onto one messy pile before heading outside.

He moved quietly through the school, grateful that the corridors were deserted. Most of the students were working hard on their projects.

As he was about to turn a corner, he heard two teachers talking. He recognised the voices: Colonel Keller and Lady Devonmoor. They were coming towards him. He wasn’t sure if the corridor leading to the medical room was out of bounds but he didn’t want to be seen, just in case. Fortunately, he was right by the door of an empty classroom, so he slipped inside, leaving the door ajar so he’d know when the teachers had passed.

He could make out the colonel’s words as they approached: ‘They should be expelled without appeal. There’s no other option.’

‘I would agree with you, Colonel,’ said Lady Devonmoor. ‘However, Cadet Young acted completely out of character. He has never so much as talked back to a teacher before. And he’s the second boy in as many days to fly into a wild rage like that.’

‘But we can’t allow any boy to hit a teacher!’

Lady Devonmoor was doing her best to calm Colonel Keller down. ‘We will get to the bottom of this,’ she said. ‘And if we discover these cadets are to blame for their behaviour, then I will allow you to come up with whatever punishment you feel is appropriate. But first, we need to find out what’s going on. I believe that there has to be a reason two of our nicest cadets would behave so appallingly.’

‘The drugs test came back negative.’ The colonel’s voice was hard. ‘So what else could it be? You think the Outlier is behind this? It’s just the kind of thing he’d do.
