Surprisingly, social support does not predict any type of community care utilization. But, ancillary analyses (not shown) indicated that having family members, especially daughters, to rely on for support reduced the probability of institutionalization. As anticipated, the analyses demonstrated that the very old, the frail, and individuals with ADL disability were more likely than non-ADL disabled persons to use a nursing facility between 1995 to 2001.

In the final analyses, we examine the influence of significant structural factors, namely, insurance status, a known barrier for inhibiting home health care service utilization. The data in Table 4 address potential differences in use by Medicaid participation. Large differences are revealed between widows and widowers in nursing facility use for welfare recipients.

The results indicate that among Medicaid recipients, widows were more likely than widowers to use senior services, community-based services, and home health care. On the other hand, widowers who had received Medicaid at time one had a greater likelihood of institutionalization than female widowed welfare recipients.
