Another Plane

Crowley the parrot said, “Welcome home.”

Matt said, “Fuck off.”

Walking through the front door and slamming it behind him, he called Kelly’s name. Once with no answer, then again with more silence. It had been three days. Not her longest departure, but it was enough to make him anxious after the fight.

He thought that maybe she was in the backyard, sitting on the porch and drinking lemonade, having forgotten all about the other night. For a long time he looked through cupboards and tidied up, hoping that if he entertained the idea for long enough it would come true.

He checked the back porch. There was a squirrel biting its way into an acorn and pile of bird shirt on the stairs. No Kelly.

Matt poured himself a glass of whiskey, skipped the ice.

The parrot stared, a gift from Esmeralda, and no, he still didn’t believe that was her real name. But he did believe she had something to do with this, believed it enough to want to go down to the shop right now and confront her.

The note was still on the fridge, scribbled in letters that didn’t quite match his wife’s script, but resembled it enough.

The whiskey burned his empty stomach as he read.

I stopped looking, Matt. I stopped like you told me to. But it turns out they found me first.

The signature seemed the most familiar, bubbly letters and a few X’s and O’s tossed in for good measure.

He grabbed his keys. Yes, he’d go to the shop and inquire, alright. He’d lock the doors behind him too.

Crowley squawked from inside his cage. “Welcome home.”

Matt gave him the finger and stepped outside.
