MADELAINE

Sebastian kisses the top of my head and then tucks me under his chin as I struggle to compose myself. I can’t believe I’m sitting in a public park on the verge of a breakdown. I’m mortified. This isn’t me. But then again, I haven’t exactly been myself since I walked in on Sebastian in that bathroom weeks ago.

I’m also so damn happy that I haven’t managed to ruin whatever this thing is between us. He is willing to give me another chance. Give us another chance. He said he wants to fly with me. I have no idea what exactly that means for us, but whatever it means, my mind is made up. I’m taking the leap. I’m placing my heart in his hands.

Please don’t break it.

I swipe my fingers under my eyes, hoping I don’t look like a raccoon. “Let me up.” I push on his chest as I try to escape. He holds on tighter. “Mon Dieu, I’m not running. I just need to fix this mess before anyone sees me.” I block my face from his view as vanity kicks in.

“Don’t be ridiculous.” He releases me but reaches for my hand. I swerve out of his reach and grab my purse.

“Don’t look,” I whisper-shout, still blocking his view. I turn my back and dig through my purse for my makeup bag. I pop open my compact and gasp. “Oh God, I’m absolutely frightening.” I make quick work of touching up the smudges and streaks before Sebastian snatches the compact out of my hand and tosses it back in my bag.

“Hey, I need that.” I reach for the compact. His thumb and forefinger grasp my chin, forcing me to look up at him.

“You’re beautiful. You don’t need it. Trust me.” I freeze. Does he mean it, or is he testing me already?

I blink up at him, my breath coming in short, shallow puffs. “But…”

He lowers his head until I can feel his breath skating over my skin. His scent crawling into my nostrils, drugging me. “Trust me, Maddie,” he says again as he lets go of my chin and zips my makeup bag closed, shoving it back into my purse. He’s calling me Maddie again. Relief washes over me. At first, I didn’t want to give him the privilege of something so intimate, but then something changed, and I loved the way it sounded coming from his lips. Earlier, when he kept things so formal and refused to give me the name I craved, I thought for sure I had blown it, but here he is, looking at me with a mixture of lust and so much more swirling behind his eyes.

I smooth my hands over my dress and look around anxiously. I see a few people, but no one is paying any attention to us. When I look up again, he is still watching me. My heart almost bursts with joy at what I see. I give in. “Okay. If you say I’m beautiful…then I’m beautiful.”

A megawatt smile flashes across his handsome face.
