Responses to Those Who Suffer
Reflect the love of Christ to others (John 13:34â35; 15:12, 17).
Meet the legitimate needs of others (Luke 10:30â37).
Be merciful as God is merciful (Matt. 18:27; Luke 10:37).
Feed the hungry (Matt. 15:32; Mark 8:2).
Give water to the thirsty (Matt. 10:42).
Conclusion
The response of believers to suffering should be similar to Jesusâs emotional response as he suffered on the cross. The worst suffering is spiritual, not just physical. For those who have faith in Christ, spiritual life is the result, including the final remedy for all physical disease and disability, because resurrection is the promise. For those who have not yet believed in Christ as their Savior, final judgment is the worst suffering about which they should worry.
Jesus talked more than any other person in the New Testament about eternal judgment. The implications for this life in light of final judgment are enormous. One dare not miss them. No one suffered as Jesus did, and no one needs to benefit from his suffering more than those yet to hear. So the best response to suffering of those who have a relationship with Christ through faith is to lead people to the only One who can take care of their suffering. For the person without faith in Christ, suffering the throes of judgment will last for eternity. In Luke 13:3, 5, Jesus reminds everyone that life is tenuous and repentance is necessary before death makes faith impossible.
