Chapter Eleven

The Talk

Today I brought Matteo to my special place in the woods behind the ball field. I guess that means he’s joining Carole and Bobby as one of my bosom buddies. I like that phrase. Those are people you hold to your chest, close to your heart. Having three bosom buddies in your life. That’s not bad, is it?

Since Carole is spending her time with Guillaume, and Bobby is consumed with his recovery, it’s nice to have a good friend I can actually spend time with and enjoy it.

We climbed up on the rock and sat on it, looking out over the trees into the distant hills. Everything always looks so green and lush in summer. And even though they’re far away, those hills don’t look unreachable at all. Just the opposite. Almost feels like they’re beckoning you to come and be part of them.

Matteo turned to me. “What are you thinking about?”

“Those hills.” I blushed. “They always make me feel good.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. It’s like they’re my future. A future that’s calling me.” I shook my head. “I know it’s stupid, but they make me feel better about my life. Like even if there’s crap going on now, when I look at those hills, I know there’s a future and I can get beyond the crap.”

Matteo smiled. “You’re a romantic.”

I blushed even more. “I guess. That’s not bad, is it?”

“No. It’s not bad at all.” Matteo leaned over and kissed me on the lips. It was very gentle and soft. Then he leaned back, still smiling.

The amazing thing is, even though I was nervous, I didn’t back away. Well, maybe I flinched a little. But I accepted his kiss. And even kissed him back for a second.

Matteo was looking at me, those big dark eyes of his sparkling.

“What do you see when you look at me?” he asked.

“A nice guy.”

“Is that all?”

Matteo was smiling flirtatiously. He reminded me of Carole a little bit, the way he focused those eyes on me. Nothing like getting someone’s undivided attention like that, even if it feels as though they’re looking right through you. But sometimes it feels good. Like at that point. You want the person to see inside you. See what you’re made of. Just like you want to look inside them too. Is that what romantic attraction is all about?

We were kissing again. My thoughts turned to Bobby, as they often do. Bobby isn’t flirtatious. Not like Matteo. Bobby is much more serious. Most of the time anyway. I find him attractive too. In a different way. Is it better? I don’t know. Just different. Bobby is Bobby and Matteo is Matteo.

“RV! RV! Come back here, RV!” Matteo was calling me softly.

I turned away and giggled, more out of embarrassment than anything else. “Sorry, Matteo. I was distracted.”

“By what?”

“Your big, dark eyes,” I should have said.

But I just sat there like a fool, not saying anything, my face hot from what I was sure was some of the deepest blushing I’ve ever done.
