âOh my god, I canât believe youâre real!â
âSo do you just, like, keep that fin in the trunk of your car, or what?â
âBut where do you put, you know, it when youâve got that on? Youâve got to tuck, right?â
Sean glares at the guy who asked that one. âOkay, thatâs a little personal, donât you think, Dale?â
I am bombarded by people. They are just as nosy and intrusive as I always thought theyâd be. Thereâs literally a line of people down the bleachers waiting to talk to me and take selfies and figure out how we got that Trojan truck to crash at exactly the right time and make sure nobody got hurt, including the driver, who some classmate insists must have been a stunt driver.
This #Fishing thing has taken off. Sean says itâs all anyoneâs been talking about at school, that they think it was some trick he pulled for his film class, and that other people are bringing their own merfins ranging from cardboard and bedsheets to full-on prosthetic scales to random spaces. And not just at his school either, but all over the country. Apparently the various videos of the crash and me flopping on the Walk of Fame have been viewed thousands of times. Some even hundreds of thousands.
The whole thing just makes me antsy. So many more people have seen me and my tail than I ever hoped to, and theyâre now looking closer into my life. And my anxiety definitely hasnât been helped by the fact that itâs been seven days since the fire hydrant mishap and we havenât done anything in front of Dominic to make him jealous. A whole week, wasted inside the bungalow watching more and more movies, but Sean says to trust him. He says that the way weâre all anyone can talk about at Shoreline is for sure eating away at Dominic, but I definitely donât feel any closer to getting my Journey Mark. I can practically hear a ticking clock, or maybe itâs just my brain playing phantom dolphin clicks since I miss the Blue so bad. And being back at Seanâs school poolâsurrounded by dozens of swimmers who can get as wet as they want without any fin theatrics happeningâis not helping.
âWe canât share our secrets,â Sean says when someone asks for details for the hundredth time. But it does nothing to stop the questions from coming until an announcer declares itâs time for the girlsâ events to begin. People finally find their seats, and I have a minute to breathe.
âWhew. Thatâs a lot. We donât do that back home, make it all about one person. Itâs community over all and I donât think my heart can handle being the center of attention.â
Sean grins. âI totally know what you mean. Iâm a behind-the-camera kind of guy.â
âExcept for today,â I say. âWeâre still on for the plan, right?â
Sean swallows. âI mean, as long as youâre still okay with it. I donât want you to feel forced to do anything you donât want to.
