In the 1930s, the FBI realized that anthropologists at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., might help them solve crimes. In 1942, they hired T. Dale Stewart as a consultant. Stewart was the director of physical anthropology at the Smithsonian. Thirty years later, Smithsonian anthropologist Larry Angel was involved in many cases. He helped answer the FBI’s numerous questions about skeletal remains. He was so involved, crime reporters called him “Sherlock Bones.”
