Eight

Elizabeth lingered over breakfast on Saturday morning. She was almost at the end of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, and she couldn't put it down. Finally, by ten o'clock she was finished.

"That was great." She stood and stretched as she looked over at her mother. "Jess should read it. I know she'd really like it."

"Speaking of Jessica, where is she?" Mrs. Wakefield asked. "Sleeping?"

Elizabeth grinned. "Remember, she needs her beauty sleep, Mom."

"At this rate she'll be the most beautiful girl in the world," Mrs. Wakefield said with a laugh.

As she trotted up the stairs to her bedroom, Elizabeth thought about her plans for the day. As soon as she was dressed, she wanted to go to the mall to buy her dress. She was hoping her twin would want to come along.

She glanced into Jessica's room. "Jessica?" she whispered. There was no answer from underneath the shapeless mound of covers on the bed. "Jess?"

"Mmm-hmm."

"Do you want to go to the mall with me to buy that dress?" Elizabeth asked softly.

The lump on the bed wriggled slightly. "Mmm—what?"

Elizabeth tiptoed in. "Do you want to go to the mall with me?"

"Sure, Liz," Jessica mumbled. Then she flopped over again, sound asleep.

Elizabeth shook her head and went into the bathroom to take a shower. She knew that by the time she was ready to go, Jessica would suddenly decide she wanted to come along. Then she would have to take a twenty-minute shower, go through her morning ritual of trying on all her clothes, put on makeup, and finally eat breakfast! Elizabeth smiled to herself as she combed conditioner through her hair.

Jessica was still dead to the world by the time Elizabeth was fully dressed. Elizabeth was standing in the doorway, contemplating her sister, when the phone rang. Jessica only twitched once at the sound, but Elizabeth hastily grabbed the extension by her twin's bed.

"Hello?" she answered.

"Hi, Daniella?" a boy's voice asked.

"No, just a moment, please." Elizabeth put her hand over the mouthpiece. "Jessica," she hissed, shaking her twin's shoulder. "It's Pierre."

Instantly Jessica sat bolt upright in bed. "What? Where?" she gasped.

"Here, it's Pierre," Elizabeth told her. She handed over the telephone.

Jessica cleared her throat, tossed her hair back, and put a sunny smile on her face. "Hi, Pierre," she murmured huskily into the receiver. "No, not at all. I was just reading the newspaper."

With a lopsided grin, Elizabeth headed back to the bathroom. "See you later," she mouthed.

"Dinner, tonight?" Jessica repeated. She looked at Elizabeth and waved goodbye. "That sounds wonderful. Six o'clock would be fine."

"How do you do it, Jess?" Elizabeth murmured. She shook her head, laughed, and went out the door.

Elizabeth walked slowly through the mall, looking at some of the displays. In front of Shear Glamour, a sign had been propped up that read: New Temporary Two-Week Perms! $20 Special Today!

Elizabeth stopped in her tracks and stared at the sign. Jessica wouldn't hesitate for a moment if she saw an offer like that. She would jump in feet first.
