One of Matisse’s many portraits of Amelie was The Woman with the Hat, which critics found scandalously unrealistic and insulting to women. An American named Leo called it “the nastiest smear of paint I had ever seen,” but he and his sister—writer Gertrude Stein—bought the painting anyway.

One of Matisse’s most famous paintings, Dance II, portrays a peasant dance he remembered from his childhood village, the tune of which he whistled as he painted. He worried that its vibrant colors would frighten viewers, and in fact the work caused such a furor when it was first exhibited that he left the country for two months, fleeing to Spain, where he took three hot baths a day to calm his nerves.
