After their glider tests in 1901, Wilbur gave a speech to a group of engineers in Chicago. He described the things he and Orville had learned. It was the first time that the Wright brothers’ work was made public. Orville relied on his brother to be the “voice” of their mission, as he was terribly afraid of public speaking.

In 1902, the Wrights returned to Kitty Hawk with yet another glider design. They used the lessons they had learned from earlier flights to make this version even better. They had high hopes, but the first several tests did not go well. The glider often spun in a circle instead of flying straight. One night, as Orville sat in his bunk, listening to the howling winds outside, he had an idea. What if the tail of the glider moved along with the wings? That might prevent the spinning. In the morning, he showed Wilbur his plan, and they tried it. It worked! Once again, the brothers had worked together, talking through ideas to solve a problem.
