All five astronauts had been working together as a team for more than a year, so they were good friends.
As they stood at the bottom of the space shuttle Challenger, it towered above them. The shuttle, facing skyward with its huge fuel tank and two rockets, was close to thirty stories high. Sally and the others took an elevator up to a movable walkway that led them to the shuttle. They got on their helmets and climbed into their seats.
All the astronauts were facing the nose of the space shuttle, so they were lying on their backs. Sally was strapped in, ready to go. But still she had to wait almost an hour for liftoff.
Finally the launch engines ignited. Sally felt the whole shuttle shaking and vibrating with a tremendous power. She heard the roar of rocket engines so powerful that they could propel the huge, heavy shuttle into space in a few minutes.
