Luisa Clemente and Roberto’s brother Matino flew up to Pittsburgh to watch Roberto play in the World Series. Roberto’s father, Melchor, was afraid of flying. He stayed home in Carolina and listened to his son’s games on the radio.
Along with baseball fans everywhere, Melchor heard one of the most exciting World Series ever. The powerful New York Yankees, the American League champions, boasted a lineup of sluggers including Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Roger Maris. In one World Series game, they beat Pittsburgh 16–3 and in another 12–0. After six games, the Pirates had scored seventeen runs, while the Yankees had piled up forty-six! However, the Pirates managed to win three games. The seventh game would decide it all.
