Chapter 6

The Inklings

In early 1926, Ronald was working at his new post as a professor at Oxford. There, Ronald met another young professor. His name was Clive Staples (C. S.) Lewis, but everyone called him Jack. Jack loved ancient myths as much as Ronald did. Growing up, he and his brother, Warnie, who also lived in Oxford, had created their own imaginary world. Jack wanted to hear more about Ronald’s imaginary world. What did he call it? Ronald named his world Middle- earth.

C. S. LEWIS (1898–1963)

C. S. “JACK” LEWIS WAS BORN IN IRELAND. LIKE J. R. R. TOLKIEN’S MOTHER, JACK’S MOTHER DIED WHEN HE WAS JUST A BOY. AND LIKE TOLKIEN, HE FOUGHT IN WORLD WAR I, WHERE HE WAS WOUNDED IN 1918. HE WAS A TEACHER AT OXFORD AND ALSO A WRITER. TOLKIEN’S CHRISTIAN FAITH WAS A HUGE INFLUENCE ON LEWIS. THIS CAN BE SEEN IN THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA SERIES. PUBLISHED BETWEEN 1950 AND 1956, THEY ARE LEWIS’S MOST POPULAR BOOKS, HAVING SOLD MILLIONS OF COPIES WORLDWIDE.
